Smaller format of new banner is designed to provide convenience and ‘easier access to fresher foods.’
Early next year, Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer will open two smaller-format stores under the Meijer Grocery banner. The 75,000- to 90,000-square-foot stores (versus Meijer’s typical supercenter of 220,000 square feet) will be in the Detroit area, in the Orion Township and Macomb Township. Meijer says they will provide “convenience for customers who are looking for a simplified shopping experience, while providing communities easier access to fresher foods.”
Each Meijer Grocery location will feature fresh produce, a fresh meat counter, a full-service deli, frozen foods, a bakery, dry grocery, pharmacy and HBC. The stores will feature parking wrapped around a singular corner entrance to maximize the number of parking spaces near the door.
The new concept is the retailer’s latest since first introducing the neighborhood market small format concept in August 2018 with the opening of the 37,000-square-foot Bridge Street Market on Grand Rapids’ west side.
“We’re excited to provide our customers with yet another way to shop,” said Don Sanderson, Group Vice President of Foods at Meijer. “This new concept store will not only provide our customers with everything they need on their weekly shopping trip, but also a quick and easy solution for when they realize they left the key ingredient off their list while cooking dinner.”
