Pennsauken, N.J.-based J&J Snack Foods saw net sales rise by 20% to $337.9 million, the highest second-quarter sales in its history. Daniel Fachner, president/CEO, said there were marked improvements during the quarter (ended March 26) in unit volumes, including strong performances in soft pretzels, churros, frozen novelties and frozen beverages. Sales in the foodservice segment gained 23.8% to $218.3 million, with $16 million in Dippin’ Dots sales and a 28.3% rise in soft pretzels, a 42.8% increase in churros and a more than 264% increase in frozen novelties, including incremental Dippin’ Dots sales. Retail sales increased 13.7% to $46.4 million, including $2.5 million of sales related to the recent launch of SuperPretzel filled knots and the expansion of handhelds with a major retailer. Retail segment growth was also driven by strong sales in frozen novelties (up 9.8%) and handhelds (283.4%). Soft pretzel sales climbed 1.7% and biscuit sales increased 3.0% versus the prior year period. Frozen beverage sales increased 13.7% to $73.2 million. J&J will launch SuperPretzel branded filled knots, Bavarian sticks and mini dogs at retail later this summer. It will also begin shipping its Hola! Churros brand at retail in September.
