Los Angeles school administrators barred 17-year-old Marielle Williamson from distributing literature promoting non-dairy milk unless she promoted cow’s milk as well. So she sued the school and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “Got Milk?” messages were already ubiquitous at the school, and Williamson felt her First Amendment rights were being violated. The nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is listed as a co-plaintiff. The dairy folks are fighting back with a satirical ad campaign mocking plant-based milks, starring the actress Aubrey Plaza. In perfect deadpan, she lovingly promotes milk made from trees, in varieties including oak, maple, cherry and mahogany. But she ends with, “Is wood milk real? Absolutely not, only real milk is real.” Do yourself a favor and Google “Aubrey Plaza Wood Milk” and watch the video. No matter what side of this battle you’re on, it’s really funny.
