Shortly after Newsweek magazine named Kroger one of “America’s Most Responsible Companies” for 2023 (the fourth year in a row), there was a full-page ad in Jan. 14-15 The Wall Street Journal saying “Kroger Can’t Be Trusted.” The ad (CantTrustKroger.com), from the non-profit Mercy for Animals, says that “For six years, Kroger told customers it would ban the sale of eggs from caged hens by 2025. In 2022, Kroger backtracked on that commitment.” But Kroger, which does lots of work on the hunger and sustainability front, gets kudos, too. “To highlight those corporations that are actually serious about trying to be good guys, Newsweek has partnered with global research and data firm Statista for our fourth annual list of America’s Most Responsible Companies,” it said in announcing Kroger as a winner.
