VIVIAN SON
DIRECTOR OF REFRIGERATED FOODS, GROCERY OUTLET
Son was the first to create and implement a direct import process for all food categories at 99 Cents Only Stores when she worked there. At Grocery Outlet, she created “category mapping,” which the company uses today for deep dives into categories, identifying growth opportunities.
She takes pride in building bench strength through the training and development of assistants and buyers. Outside of work, Son used to run an animal rescue organization in Southern California. “Although I no longer have the time/ability to run it, I still support and volunteer my time to the cause,” she says.
Son notes that women are highly under-represented in leadership within the grocery industry, despite so many who are dedicated to growing the business and mentoring others. She urges other women to dedicate time to creating and building relationships both within their companies and the industry. “Having that larger reach allows you to advocate for things you believe in, and gives you the platform to align your goals with others.”
