MID- & THIRD-TIER FROZEN
During the 12 weeks ended Aug. 7, sales of frozen foods in supermarkets, drugstores, mass merchants, military commissaries and select club and dollar stores combined hit $17.78 billion, up 8.9% compared with the same period a year ago, according to Chicago-based market research firm IRI (iriworldwide.com). However, unit sales dropped 5.5% to 3.68 billion.
For the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7, dollar sales shot up 6.4% to $73.10 billion while units fell 4.0% to 16.22 billion.
Our chart shows the second- and third-tier frozen subcategories (Nos. 13 to 39 in dollar sales), including the leading brands, for the 12 weeks ended Aug. 7. Note that, instead of reporting sales for multiple individual brands and line extensions that fall under the same parent brand, IRI is now combining them into a single “brand franchise.”

Sales of refrigerated foods in supermarkets, drugstores, mass merchants, military commissaries and select club and dollar stores combined topped $31.59 billion during the 12 weeks ended Aug. 7, up 12.3% versus the same period a year ago, reports Chicago-based market research firm IRI (iriworldwide.com). However, unit sales tumbled 3.2% to 7.99 billion.
For the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7, dollar sales jumped 8.1% to $131.27 billion while units fell 2.4% to 35.72 billion.
