Now that Nelson Peltz has gained a seat on the board of Unilever, observers think the activist investor may try to exert influence over the firm’s Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. If you’ve not been living under a rock the past several decades, you know Ben & Jerry’s is a free spirit that is not shy about politics. After the brand said last year it would end sales in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, The Wall Street Journal says, Peltz met with Unilever CEO Alan Jope at the request of Israel’s government. Peltz told Jope that no company should make political statements. Jope has said there’s little he can do because of an acquisition agreement where Unilever agreed to let Ben & Jerry’s decide its own social mission.
