BY PETER PENGUIN

During the 12 weeks ended March 20, sales of frozen foods in supermarkets, drugstores, mass merchants, military commissaries and select club and dollar stores combined topped $17.14 billion, a 5.4% increase compared with the same period a year ago, reports Chicago-based market research firm IRI (iriworldwide.com). However, unit sales tumbled 4.7% to 3.82 billion.

For the 52 weeks ended March 20, dollar sales climbed 1.2% to $70.84 billion while units fell 4.1% to 16.57 billion.

Our chart shows the third-tier frozen subcategories (Nos. 25 to 36 in dollar sales), including the leading brands, for the 12 weeks ended March 20. Note that, instead of reporting sales for multiple individual brands and line extensions under the same parent brand, IRI is now combining them into a single “brand franchise.”

Only brands with at least $250,000 in sales during the period are listed.
