Veggie-First Fresh Organic Baby Food

Chicago-based lil’ gourmets (lilgourmets.com) adds Coconut Cauliflower Mash (with carrots, peas, lime, tamarind, coriander and ginger) to its line of globally inspired, organic refrigerated baby and toddler foods. Billed as the market’s “first and only” veggie-first brand, all four flavors in the chef-crafted, NEXTY-winning collection are made up of at least 70% vegetables and beans and no added salt or sugar. Other flavor-forward, nutrient-dense varieties include Cinnamon Beets & Apples, Sweet Potato Curry and Moroccan Butternut Squash, each with 3 to 5 grams of naturally occurring sugar. Packed eight to a case, each 3.5-ounce meal is expected to sell for $3.49 to $3.99.

This trend for substituting plant based products is concerning as they are not complete protein with the exception of soy which is among the reasons that soy is used in baby formula around the world and why baby formula is so strictly controlled. New studies are showing that if the protein is not complete and offers all essential amino acids it will not synthesize muscle as effectively for growth. While this can be a nice food addition it should not be sued as basic support product.
